Have you ever wondered what would have happened if Texas seceded when George W. Bush became governor or Rick Perry? This is the book that tells us what happened! Not exactly, but it is a well-crafted and witty political satire with jokes that hit so close to home that you just have to laugh in spite of wanting to cry! The Republic of Jack follows Jack Cowherd, the Attorney General of Texas and a charismatic leader. Jack runs for governor and wins, which is great! But, Jack has made some promises that will be very hard to keep! Texas ends up being booted out of the Union after some very pro-Texas demonstrations, which is an incredibly interesting premise for a book!
Being a lifelong resident of Texas and lover of all things politics, this book was a really fun read! Author Jeffrey Kerr masterfully weaves a political narrative with creative metaphors and imaginative writing to give the reader a satisfying adult novel revolving around Governor/President Jack Cowherd. Antics and hijinks aren’t quite the right words, but some really interesting situations result from Texas’ secession from the Union! There’s just something to the ring of: “The first joint session of the first second Republic of Texas Congress will now begin.” It’s a ridiculous notion, but gosh wouldn’t it be grand? Of course, this is a satirical book which draws some of it’s humor from parallels with our real-life political situation.
This book has several strengths including very well-written dialogue and scenes that made me laugh out loud! The plot was fast-paced, wholly original, and authentically Texan. I really believe that I loved this book so much for the reasons preceding this sentence, but also because it was so dang Texan. There are so many references to the peculiar way that Texas’ legislative and governmental structure is composed, which differ slightly from other states. And goodness, can you imagine not being able to play a football game because you’ve been detained by immigration for traveling without the proper documents? The Houston Texans certainly found out in this book!
This is all around a great book and one I would recommend to any of my friends who enjoy a good satire about Texas politics! Jack Cowherd and his staff are witty and full of fun! You can be that I’ll be looking for more books by Jeffrey Kerr to add to my shelves! Thank you so much to author Jeffrey Kerr and Lone Star Book Blog Tours for the opportunity to read and review this book! I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
